The Vatican has released a new update on Pope Francis\u2019 condition as he continues his hospitalization in Rome while confirming that while his prognosis remains “guarded”.<\/p>\n
The 88-year-old Pontiff has been receiving treatment for bilateral pneumonia at Rome\u2019s Gemelli Hospital since February 14.<\/p>\n
While initial reports suggested he was responding well, his recovery took a serious turn on Monday (March 3) when he suffered \u201ctwo episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Holy See Press Office has now stated on Tuesday morning: “The Pope slept through the night and now continues to rest.”<\/p>\n
Emergency Procedures and Ongoing Treatment<\/strong> \nDoctors performed bronchoscopies both times to remove the mucus buildup that triggered the respiratory crises. By Monday afternoon, \u201cnon-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed,\u201d according to the Vatican.<\/p>\nThe Pope’s prognosis remains “guarded”. Despite the serious setbacks, the Pope \u201cremained alert, oriented, and cooperative at all times,\u201d the statement confirmed. Encouragingly, his blood tests showed no elevated white blood cell count, indicating no new respiratory infection.<\/p>\n
However, the Vatican has warned that Pope Francis\u2019 clinical condition remains complex, and further respiratory crises remain possible. His medical team remains cautious, maintaining a “guarded” prognosis.<\/p>\n
A Resilient Spirit Amid Health Battles<\/strong> \nPope Francis has battled respiratory issues since his 20s, when he had part of a lung removed due to pleurisy. His medical history makes his current condition particularly concerning, with doctors keeping a close watch on any further complications.<\/p>\n
Still, the Pope\u2019s resilience has been evident throughout his hospitalization.
