Growing up in Senegal, Diop\u2019s life was anything but ordinary. At the age of 2, her mother relocated to New York, leaving her under the care of her aunt. Despite her cousins\u2019 encouragement to use skin-bleaching products, Diop consistently refused, acknowledging the accessibility of these products in her country but also understanding their potential harm to the skin.<\/p>\n

While admitting,”I never tried it, but I\u2019m not going to lie, I wanted to be lighter,” Diop\u2019s encounters with teasing led to moments of isolation, causing her to skip school and experience feelings of shame. However, her older sister played a pivotal role in helping her embrace the positive aspects of her uniqueness.<\/p>\n

From a young age, Diop encountered prejudice due to her deep and rich skin tone, attracting taunts from other children. Recalling this period, she remembers being labeled with nicknames like \u201cMidnight\u201d or \u201cMother of Stars.\u201d Despite the hurtful comments, she discovered the strength to embrace both her inner and outer beauty, opting not to dwell on the criticism.<\/p>\n

She becomes the \u2019melanin goddess\u2019.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

She proudly identifies herself as a \u2019melanin goddess.\u2019 Elaborating on the nickname, she explained, \u201c[I gave myself the nickname] because of my dark, melanin-rich complexion and because I want to inspire young girls and let them know that we are all goddesses inside and out.\u201d Her message is simple yet powerful: \u201cHow you look doesn\u2019t matter as long as you feel beautiful inside.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, she joined Instagram with the @BlackBarbie handle, a childhood nickname given by her friends. However, she soon decided to create something empowering for other dark-skinned girls. This led to the creation of @melaniin.goddess. Her aim is to demonstrate that having a dark complexion is not a negative attribute; instead, being different is beautiful. She takes pride in assisting girls in realizing that they don\u2019t have to change who they are.<\/p>\n
